File renaming help

Quick start

  1. Choose your files. Select a folder, or drop files and folders onto the page. Set whether to include subfolders and hidden files before importing.
  2. Choose a rule. Use Numbering, Replacing or Scripting, then check the new names in the preview.
  3. Rename. Select Rename N files when the preview is ready. Keep the page open until it finishes.

You can exclude files from the preview without deleting them from disk, and restore them if you change your mind. Sorting or reordering the list changes the numbering order.

Browser support

Nomio needs a desktop browser with both folder access and file move support, plus your permission to modify the selected folder. The app checks these capabilities before enabling renaming. Opening the website does not establish support; mobile devices and every version of a browser are not guaranteed to work. If the check fails, use a supported desktop environment or a native renaming app.

Common questions

Will my files be uploaded?

No. The built-in renaming features process files on your device. If you use custom scripts, only run code you trust. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Why does Nomio ask for folder permission?

Your browser needs your permission before Nomio can rename files. When you drop individual files, choose their containing folder when prompted. Only the files you dropped are added, not every file in that folder. Files from different folders may need separate folder selections.

Can I drop more than one file?

Yes. You can drop multiple files and folders. Dropping just one file also works; the reminder simply lets you know you can add more.

Can I rename folders?

No. Nomio renames files, including files inside subfolders when that option is enabled. Folder names stay unchanged.

Why is folder selection unavailable?

Your desktop browser must support both folder access and file renaming. Nomio checks this automatically. If these features are unavailable, try another desktop browser or a native renaming app.

Where are my settings saved?

Saved custom sequences and scripts stay in this browser on this device. Clearing the site’s browsing data removes them. Your selected files and unsaved rule settings reset when you leave or reload the page.

Can I combine rules?

One rule applies at a time. Switching tabs keeps your files and each rule’s settings, but does not combine the rules. To apply another rule after renaming, select the files again.

Examples

Add numbers

To change photo.jpg to 001-photo.jpg, choose the 001, 002, 003, ... style, start at 1, use - as the custom text and place the number before the original name. Existing numbering is removed only if you enable that option.

Replace text

To replace spaces with hyphens, choose Find & Replace, enter a space in Find and - in Replace. Select Name only to keep the extension unchanged. Leave Replace empty to remove matching text.

For pattern matching, enable Regular Expression. You can reuse captured text with $1, $2, and so on.

Use a custom script

In Scripting, open Manage Scripts and create a script. Define rename(file) and return the full new name, including its extension. This example changes photo.jpg to 1-photo.jpg for the first file:

function rename(file) {
  return file.index + '-' + file.name
}

Check the test result, save the script, then select it to preview the batch. Only use scripts you trust; they run while previews are generated, before you rename any files.

Scripts now run in a background worker. Older scripts that use window, document or localStorage need to be updated; these are not available there. The script editor lists the file information you can use.

Troubleshooting

The preview timed out

Custom script batch previews have a ten-second limit. Script test runs in the editor and regular expression previews have a two-second limit. Simplify the rule or try fewer files, then wait for a successful preview before renaming.

A new name has a conflict

Check for duplicate names, invalid characters or a file that already has the target name. Adjust the rule or exclude the affected file, then check the preview again.

Some files could not be renamed

Review each file in the result table. Some files may have been renamed while others were restored or need your attention. Check the actual files before trying again.

If a batch fails, use Save error details before leaving or selecting files again. This records what happened; it does not automatically undo changes.
